Foundation Soils
PURPOSE AND SCOPE
At your request, K & A Englneenng, Inc_ has completed a geotechnical investigation of the eXisting salls on the
subject property. Our understanding IS that a wood-framed single-family residence supported by a cast-in-
place concrete spread footing foundation is proposed for construction on this site.
The purpose of our investigation was to determine the sUitability of the soils for construction of the proposed
structure, and provide recommendatIons for construction of the foundation. The scope of our services IS limited
to general surtablhty with respect to beanng capacity and expanSive salls
FOUNDATION PAD PREPARATION
The project site IS located on the west side of South 5J1h Place on a residential lot In the new" Jasper Meadows"
subdlvlslon_ The lot IS mostly level and there are no apparent slope movement hazards The anginal ground
surface is low lying and IS poorly drained.
Based on the foundation pad excavation, soils consist of approximately 1.5 to 2.5-feet of dark brown, wet,
loose, organic silt, over gray, wet, moderately stiff, plastIC clay with some areas mixed with weathered and
decomposed sandstone.
FoundatIOn preparation Involved constructing a level foundation pad on a subgrade conSIsting of native
undisturbed Salls ThiS required excavating and removing approximately 1_5 to 2.5-feet of dark brown organic
SIlt from the foundation pad area After the excavatIOn and removal of the unsuitable soils, approximately 3 to 4-
feet of 3-inch minus Silty sandy gravel with angular gravels up to 3-inches was placed over the subgrade and
compacted with a vibratory steel drum roller. Approximately 6-inches of %-inch minus dense graded crushed
aggregate was then placed, graded, and compacted on the foundation pad. This served to provide a uniform
surface for footing construction at the deSired elevation The fill matenals were placed and then compacted
uSing a VIbratory steel drum relleL
We tested the m-place density of the o/4-inch mmus dense graded crushed aggregate fill and have determmed
that the average dry denSity exceeds 95-percent of maximum as determmed by ASTM D698 The field test
results are attached to thiS report.

SUMMARY AND RECOMMENDATIONS
The project s~e, as prepared, is sUitable to support the proposed foundations. We recommend a design
allowable bearing capacity of 2,OOO-pounds per square foot.
The soils present a moderate shrink/swell hazard Foundation loads should bear on undisturbed native si~s a
mInimum depth of 36-inches below final grade around the penmeter foundation The prepared foundation pad
meets these recommendations.
Final grading around the foundation pad should raise the grade above the foundation using native or imported
silts and should slope away from the foundation.
We recommend approval of the foundation pad, as constructed, bV the building official.
Thank you for the opportunity to be of service. Please call us If you have Questions or need further assistance.
Respectfully,
Steve Schultz, E.I T.
