Dear Ms Filkins:
At the request of the Springfield Fire and Life Safety Department,' the Building
Safet)" Division recently conducted an inspection at the above address. The
inspection revealed the following conditions which must be corrected in order for
the building to comply with applicable City Codes. The following items must be
repaired, replaced, installed or modified:

Structural Specialty Code and Fire and Life Safety Code
1. The upstairs attic space is being used for storage of combustible materials
without adequate wall and ceiling fire protection, in violation of Section
11.207 of the Uniform Fire Code.
2. The attic office exits through the storage .room, and these. rooms exit
through the kitchen area, in violation of Section 3303(e) of the Structural
Specialty Code (SSC). Approved, fire protected exitways are required for
exiting through these areas.

attic stairway is insufficient in the following ways:
Stairway width is less than the required 36 inches (SSC 3306(b)).
Stair risers exceed the maximum allowable height(SSC. 3306(C)).
Required handrails are missing (SSC 3306(j)).

The exposed, flammable paper facing on the attic insulation is unprotected.
The Structural Specialty Code requires such facings to be protected by
direct contact with approved surface materials, such as gypsum board (SSC
1713).

5. The upstairs office area lacks required ventilation for habitation (SSC 705).

The above deficiencies must be eliminated within the next 30 days py either
discontinuing the uses causing the cited violations, or modifications"} must be
made to the existing building which will allow for the proper use of the
structure, including adequate fire protection. If this option is selected, plans
must be submitted and permits obtained from this office before any modifications
to the structure begin. . .
