Dear Mr. Gardels:
Subject: Sears-oil interceptor, Gateway Mall
We have reviewed your May 22 letter requesting the City's
approval for the use of the modified 1000 gal. tank as a
substitute for the oil interceptor required for the auto center
drain. Ralph Shaw, City Plumbing Inspector, has adv ised that
although a true oil interceptor as required by the Code will
automatically draw off excess oils and volatiles in the waste
water to a separate storage tank, the interceptor you submitted
will be acceptable with the condition that the interceptor will
be regularly serviced as indicated in your letter. He
emphasized the need for continued maintenance with this type of
interceptor for proper oil separation.
We will file your letter with our project records as your
commitment (and that of Sear) that the required maintenance
will take place regularly.

Gentlemen:
I haye asked ou'r mechanical engineering staff to reyiew the oil interceptor
drawings submitted for the Sears auto center which you haye disapproyed due
to absence of storage capability. They adyise me that this interceptor does
haye storage capability which can be drawn off periodically as required by
the Uniform Plumbing Code. We haye also contacted the mechanical
representative ,for Sears at the Sears Tower in Chicago, Illinois and have
verified that these interceptors are drawn off every two weeks, and that
this type interceptor is used at other locations. It should be pointed out
that the fluids entering the interceptor are from periodic wash down of the
auto center floor. Oil and other fluids removed from autos for servicing
are stored in other containers aboye ground within the facility and are not
entered into this system.
I ask that you please reconsider this submittal.
