I am writing this letter regarding the installation Of my home'S lap siding,
This is an addendum to Issues included in memo 97-07-7-16,
on August 29,1997, City of springfield building inspector Mr. Marx evaluated
(IlY tlome's L-P Siding, In addition, the evaluation was witnessed by another
member of your department, The purpose of the evaluation was to review
allegations of improper installation by the home'S general contractor.
After the evaluation by your building inspector. a consultant made another
review of the home'S general contractor's installation Of the siding, It was
found that the width of the siding was eight inches, L-P'S installation
instruction requires eight-inCh siding to have an overlap of 1 '/2 inches, My
siding was installed used only a "one-Inch" overlap! This is one reason for the
numerous exposed face-nails in the siding, If the correct 1 'h inch overlap
was followed in the installation process, those nails would have been cover
by the overlapping siding,
Further, as you are aware from your inspector's evaluation, the butt-gap-joint
is smaller than the installation'S requirements of 3/16ths, According to the
consultant, when the butt-gap is smaller than the recommended 3/16ths gap.
the siding will buckle, The siding buckle is caused by moisture which causes
the siding to expand in length, When the butt-gap Js too small, the
expanding siding has no where to expand except away from the house, once
the siding has buckled. it must be face-nailed to hold It against the wall as on
my house,
Another improper installation issue is the clearance between the siding and
roof rake, The Clearance Is less than the recommended two-inChes, The
Siding actually touches the roof allowing rain to be absorbed by the siding,

Finally, the sealant used to seal gaps at joints has been forced from the
expanded siding and in other areas of siding installation too, The sealant has
lost its elasticity and does not cover the butt..gap joint. It appears the
sealant has failed Its 25 year waranty,
AS you are aware from articles written in trade journals regarding the
installation of L-P'S siding, the prOduct is conducive to absorbing moisture,
When the siding is not sealed correctly, the siding will not properly protect
the home'S infrastructure and the product'S warranty becomes void,
My home'S siding installation was not properly installed per manufacture's
instructions, The improper issues are: (1) face-nails were not sealed, (2) butt-
joint..gap too narrow (preventing expanSion of siding and causing siding
buckling). (3) siding overlap was too small. (4) clearance of roof rakes less
than two-inches. (5) failure to use corrosion resistant nails. (6) the sealant has
failed to seal, the product from moisture, and (7) the warranty has been
voided,
I am asking you r€-€valuate the above issues identified by the consultant and
to provide me a complete written reply,
Your inspector said he would like meet with the home's builder In an effort
to correct these issues, It has been over two week since your inspector's
evaluation and I have not received a written reply from him, your office, nor'
the City'S attorney, I am assuming you have choosen not to reply as you
have on other issues,
Again. this is a simple Issue to evah,late by comparing the above issues to
literature provided by L-P'S per their Installation and finishing requirements,
I expect an answer from you within five working days_
