HomeMy WebLinkAboutItem 17 Correspondence from Dennis Shine, Springfield, Oregon Regarding His Support for the Springfield Public Library WHY I LOVE MY LIBRARY A-pr i f 2/Jb!5 As a retired educator and a past president of the Friends of the Springfield Public Library, I viewthe l~brary as an essential part of the education system provided to the people of Springfield. This view has been expressed by Dr. Nancy Golden, the Superintendent of the Springfield School District, but it is not the view held by some members of the government of Springfield. As a consequence of the failure of the government of Springfield to allocate adequate funds to the library, the Oregon Library Association has cited our library as being in- adequate in terms of the size of its collection and its hours of operation for a city of our size. Since the "powers that be" are concerned with improving the downtown area of Springfield, perhaps they should allocate funds needed to meet the OLA's guide- lines for hours of operation. If so, perhaps there would be more families on the streets of down-town Springfield aftet dark using our library and fewer "ladies of the evening" who frequent the area now.
