Sewer Permit Application
Dear City of Springfjeld Development Services Department;
Our old sewer line is failing and needs to be replaced. A new Ijne location must be
dug as the old line is currently under a 1960's addition to the house. As replacing a
sewer line does not add any value to our house we had hoped to include the addition
a new full bath in the basement. This would add value and expand the usability of our
house tremendously.
Currently there is a drainpipe for grey-water (washing machine and utility sink) in the
basement but it is unaffected by the periodical clogging of the sewer line which
services the main floor. Why this is so we are not sure, and possibly we may never
know. There is also an old connection for a toilet in the house which has been
plugged. because of problems in the past. We assume that this capped line for the
basement went to a septic tank which not used now. (The septic tank may still be in
the ground and may still serve the grey-water coming from the' basement.) Whatever
may exist down there we intend to replace it with a new line and know where it goes.
We have what appears to be only one option for the line to connect to the City if we put
in the bathroom in the basement. and that is to tap into the manhole located just off the
Southeast corner of our property. The 8" line to the South is not low enough to drajn
the basement without a lift pump of some sort, which is something we would rather not
do because of maintenance and certain failure at some point in the future. And the 27"
main Ijne to the East is not an option. Because of the questionable condition of the old
27" line Mr. Keith Miyata. has recommended that once the line reaches the manhole jt'
be an internal drop line rather than an external drop line. We understand this to mean
that our line would tap into the manhole at approximately 8 feet down and then turn
down and end 1-2 feet above the top of the 27" line. This 1-2 feet would allow for the
line to run at its capacity and not have waste returning into our basement. The
required check yalves will also keep this from happening.
All in all it comes down to whether or not we will be allowed to upgrade our home by
adding the sewer line to our basement. Though it is a variation of normal sewer
hookup practice. we hope that you will allow us to go forward with this and add a great
deal of usability and value to our house.
