Subject: Inspection of Foundation Soil Preparation
458 So. 72"d St.
Springfield, OR
As requested, K & A Engineering, Inc. has inspected the preparation of the foundation soils for the construction
of a foundation for a single-family residence. This inspection was made pursuant to our recommendations
dated October 10, 2003.
The foundation soils at the site were prepared in accordance with our recommendations and consisted of
excavation of the foundation area to undisturbed weathered tuff. The finished excavation was in two benches.
Cuts ranged from 3-feet along the north bench to 5 to 7 -feet along the north edge of the foundation area. A
large deposit of soft, saturated, highly plastic tan clay was removed from the middle 1/3 of the excavation.
Groundwater was not encountered.
1 to 6-feet of 3-inch open-graded quarry stone was placed in the excavation in layers not exceeding 12-inches
and seated with the hydrauliC excavator bucket. Approximately 6 to 12-inches of %-inch minus dense-graded
crushed aggregate was placed on top of the quarry stone and compacted. Our field-testing of the aggregate
after compaction indicates that the dry density exceeds 95% of maximum as detennined by ASTM D698.
The foundation soils, as prepared, are suitable to support the proposed foundation and intended foundation
loads. We recommend acceptance of the site, as prepared, by the Springfield building official.
Thank you for the opportunity to be of service. Please call us if you have questions or need further assistance.
Respectfully,
