- Th~se usually are a piece of steet reinforcing rod (rebar) of 1/4 to I inch diameter or lengths of
iron pipe with diameterS of 1/2 to 4 inches. They inay or may not have tags or caps of brass, ,
aluminum orplas~ic with identifying letters, numbers or combinations ofthe two. They are
typically found at ~ecogni~d property occupation limits, fence comer areas, hedge rows and
between utility services like water meters. Along road right-of ways: they can be found 1/2 to eight
, feet behind the back of sidewalk, and may be found at tYpical "occupation" lines as delineated
'ahove and also at areas where roads make angular changes, curve or change in width.,

" In asphalt or concrete streetS, these are typically nails of v;1rious types, sometimes with '.
identifying tags or washerS. They can also be ''rehars'' or iron pipes as delirieated above. They can
be' fo~nd typically at the intersections of roads, on the center of both roads, and on the,center of
, one arid the right-of-way of the other. they may also be found at angles and curves of road ,

3) Road Reference Monuments and Benchmarks
These are typici.ily s!)1all nails, set in concrete curbs in the vicinity of road centerline markers.
They also can bebrass caps of 1/2 to'2inches in diameter. Benchmarks (vertical control '
monuments) can also be squares chiseled in' to the curb ,concrete. A system offederally installed
precise benchmarks comprises iron rods set into aluminum "valve~type" ~ases at South A st in the
vicinity of 14th st, and along Main St: in the vicinities of 24th st, 33rd st (at hOliseno, 185 -N ' '

, 4) Government Control Monuments
, These typically comprise brass caps set in concrete monuments, railroad spikes set in paving
and various typesofri1on~meittsset in "valve~type" cases. Their location varies with the type of ,
monument and does not follow any typical location pattern. 'Oftenthere are warning signs in the
vicinity or survey stakes and colorful ribbon to alert you to these monuments.
