TE:LEPHONI' (541) 942-<:>126 FAX (541) 942-7G,5 Mr. Eric Young Young Construction Co, 1304 West Main St. Cottage Grove, OR 97424 RE: 7295 Elderberry St., Springfield Oregon, Survey of Retaining Walls Dear Eric: On January 25,2001, I surveyed the existing rear and middle Concrete Masonry Unit (CMU) foundation walls and the taller portIons of the side eMU foundatIOn walls by means of a Schoenstadt GA-52 metal detector. For the most part, I obtained good signal strength with clear variations Indicatlng presence of magnetic materials at certain locatIons Based on our survey of the walls it appears that there is vertical stecllocated at 16" on center in the rcar and side walls and at 24" on center in the middle wall. This steel appeared to run the entire height of the wall. In several locations where our survey indicated steel in the center of the wall, tips of deformed steel bars were visible at cut-outs in the sill plate. The visible bars were both #4 and #5. There also appeared to be horizontal steel every 32" in all walls surveyed I was unablc to visually identify the size of the horizontal steel without destroying the wall According to our design, the rear wall reinforcmg stcel should have been at least #4 bars @ 16" o C vertically and #4 bars @ 32" o.c. horizontaL The middle wall was to contain #4 bars @ 32" Q,C, vertically and horizontally In my professioIlal.9pinion, based on our inspection and my experience in this area. the reinforcing steel in the rear, side and middle walls appears to be spaced and SIzed in accordance with our design dated September 5, 2000 for two restramed eMU retaining wall heights I trust thIS letter adequately addresses your concerns. The excavation involved the placement of %" minus crushed river rock. The depth of the fill is a minimum of 4" and is compacted to a minimum density of90% of a modified proctor. Site was proof roned with a fully loaded dump truck (load ticket of over 10 tons) and no pumping or exce~sive deneclion~ weft: no led.
