HomeMy WebLinkAboutItem 20 Correspondence from Kathryn Terhune Cotton, Regarding Need for Resources for Pet Overpopulation Page 'I of 1 WILSON Julie From: Kathryn Terhune Cotton [extraears@hotmail.com] Sent: Monday, December 24,20078:47 AM To: Springfield CMOMail Subject: need for resouces for pet overpopulation Dear Mayor Leikin & council members: ;' I received an email from a list that I belong to that on Tuesday, December 18th Councilman Dave Ralston held a meeting , regarding the pet overpopulation problem in Springfield. Unfortunately I did not get the email until the following day so I (much to my disappointment) missed the meeting. Having been involved in 'rescuing' stray pets for most of my life I certainly would have welcomed the opportunity to offer input. As you likely know there are several groups in Lane County, mostly in Eugene actually, that are struggling to deal with this crisis. The problem is there are no such groups in and for Springfield and no shelter. It is really getting completely unacceptable that in a city that has grown and is continuing to grow the way Springfield is that there is nothing for stray and unwanted animals. Those of us individuals that take stray dogs and cats off the streets or rescue them from irresponsible and/or abusive owners are totally overwhelmed. I regularly get calls from people asking where they can take a cat or dog they found wandering the streets. The most heartbreaking call I received was from a child who had found a kitten. He wanted to know if I could take it and if not, where else could he take it as his mother would not let him keep it. I broke my heart to have to turn him down and tell him "There is no where". I'm sure the poor kitten was left out on the streets to fend for itself and a child who had so wanted to do the right thing learned a hard lesson in life. Further, people who perhaps might be more likely to adopt from a shelter are often put off by having to travel to Eugene to LCAS (formerly LCARA) or even further out to Greenhill. It is high time that Springfield had it's own shelter facility! Thank you, Regards, Kathryn Terhune Cotton 520 Pacific Ave Springfield, OR 97477 The best games are on Xbox 360.
