Dear Mr. Koelling:
At the request of the tenant, Jackie Smith, the Springfield Building Safety Division
conducted a courtesy inspection at the above referenced address. The following items
are deemed hazardous and do not meet the minimum standards of the Springfield Housing
Code.
Electrical
1) The light fixture in the dining room is not properly secured to the ceiling
and is likely to cause a short circuit, throw sparks, or fall and injure someone.
Repair or replace the fixture and/or mounting device and make it a safe
installation.
2) Repair or replace the defective smoke detector. The tenant has tried a new
battery and says it still will not work. An operating smoke detector can save
lives.
3) It is recommended that a ground fault circuit interrupter be installed in the
bathroom to eliminate the possibility of the occurence of a fatal shock to
occupants.
Plumbing,
1) Repair both leaking faucets. One is on the lavatory in the bathroom and the
other is on the kitchen sink. Both faucets leak hot water excessively, which
causes the cold water line to sweat and drip water onto the top of the water
heater close to the electrical connection. By repairing both faucets, the cold
water pipe to the water heater will stop condensating and could save someone
from fatal shock.

Because of previous violations in the same apartment complex that have not been
corrected, the Springfield Building Safety Division will check on progress in 7 days
from the date of this letter.
