Mr. Richard Novak

Ridgefield, CT 06B77
, Dear Mr. Novak:
Mr. J.Bergeron has indicated that you wish to be informed of any
hazards to the septic disposal system, that might occur as the
result of putting the wash water from your KIS minilab processors
down the drain.
The effluents from the photoprocessing of color films and paper are
environmentally inocuous. The color processing solutions of today
are formulated to have a minimum impact on the waste disposal
systems. The components are readily biodegradable, and have no
inhibiting effect on the bacterial activity of the treatment
facility. Those salts which are present in any significant
concentrations are phosphates, carbonates and sulfates, the same as
those used in,-household laundry detergents.
Inasmuch as the wash waters from the processor{s) are mixed together
the dissolved solids concentration is low, the pH is essentially
neutral to mildly alkaline, ranging between 7.0 and B.5, and the
temperature seldom reaches B50F., lower than bath water.
Kis formulations for film and paper contain no heavy metals such as
lead, zinc, copper, nickel or mercury.
The waste does not contain any cyanide. Suspended solids are
considerably less than those present in the sanitary sewer
effluents. Trace quantities of silver are not unusual, coming from
the fixing-out of film and paper. Good housekeeping and proper
monitoring of the silver recovery system should hold this to a low

acceptable level of a few parts per million. Any dissolved silver
in the waste is present as thiosulfate complex, in which the silver
is tightly bonded. This species of silver at these low '
concentrations has no toxic effects, as distinct from the greater
toxicity of the free silver ion.
I trust that the foregoing will be sufficient for your purpose.
However, if further information is needed, do not hesitate to call

PHILIP A.HUNT CHEMICAL CORPORATION
BIOLOGICAL OXYGEN DEMAND OF PHOTOGRAPHIC CHEMICALS
The decomposition of waste in a municipal sewage secondary
treatment plant depends on aerobic bacterial activity; oxygen
is consumed during the biodegradation processes. A septic
tank, on the other hand, is a closed anerobic system; bio-
degradation occurs in the absence of oxygen.
Over 99 percent of photofinishers discharge waste water to
sewage treatment piants. The latter are concerned with the load
of biodegradable constituents that enter their works, therefore,
they often request information on the biological oxygen demand
(BOD) or chemical oxygen demand (COD) of the effluent passing
into the sewer. An explanation of this terminology and the '
arithmetic of using the data is contained in Kodak Publication
J-4l, "BODS & COD of Kodak Photographic Chemicals."
The BODS and COD values for Hunt packaged chemistry kits have
been determined. These are given in the attached table, express-
ed either as pounds per gallon of replenisher or grams per liter.

SILVER IN PHOTOGRAPHIC .r.tr".n..uuuS
It is a fact that almost all photofinishers discharge waste to a
publically-owned (municipal).sewage treatment plant. Therefore, it
is the local sewer code that determines what is or is not acceptable
going to the sewer. Federal EPA effluent guide lines on the other
hand apply specifically for control of discharges to open waters or
ground water.
The three most closely controlled ionic species emanating from photo- .','
processing plants are cyanide, chromate, and silver. It is extremely (~
unlikely that cyanide would ever appear except under exceptional cir- '
cumstances involving ferricyanide bleaches. Chromate occurs only in
a few motion picture fi1m processes. However, silver is a1most always
present in measurable amounts 'in photoprocessing effluents. Since most
sewer codes do require a statement regarding silver, we will attempt
to address this point.
Silver content is usually expressed as a concentration, i.e., 5 milli-
grams per liter (5 mg/L) or, less often, troy ounces per gallon (1.0
troy oz/gal = 8.2 mg/L). The sewage treatment plant is more concerned.
with the quantity of silver it has to deal. with so it also requires
that the total volume of effluent discharged per day (or week, or year)
also be given. Most large treatment facilities are not unduly concern-
ed about a reasonable quantity of silver going to drain because 1) the
photographic effluent will be greatly diluted with other sewage by the
time it reaches the plant, and 2) silver from photoprocessing waste is
no longer regulated as a hazardous waste.

To get a feeling for what constitutes a "reasonable" concentration of
silver, the table following gives some rough approximations as guide-
posts.

A low level in wash water.
