Interview candidates per requirement. ISSUE STATEMENT: The Library Advisory Board has two vacancies, one due to the expired term of Jocelyn Harley (12/2014) and one for the vacated position of Laura Madsen (12/2015) who resigned one year early. Two candidates applied for the open positions. They are Peter Fehrs and Victoria Stephens. Both candidates were interviewed by the Board at their December 2, 2014 meeting. The Board is forwarding their recommendation to the Council to interview Mr. Fehrs and Ms. Stephens as finalists for the two positions. If both candidates are successful the Board with consult with them to determine who will fill the open seat and who will assume the final year of Ms. Madsen’s term. The four-year term will expire on December 31, 2018 with the 1 year term expiring December 31, 2015. The Board interviewed candidates Victoria Stephens and Peter Fehrs at its December 2, 2014 meeting and is forwarding its recommendation to Council to interview them as finalists for the two open positions. Ms. Stephens is a 25-year Springfield resident with AA degrees in multi-media design and computer programming. She has also worked as a journalist and currently serves on the board of the local credit union. She has previously served on the board of Community Television of Lane County. Mr. Fehrs is a new Springfield homeowner and works as a Senior Human Resources Consultant for the Eugene Water & Electric Board. Mr. Fehrs also holds a law degree from the University of Oregon and is a former City of Springfield employee of their Human Resources department. The Library Advisory Board believes these candidates are eligible and qualified to serve on the board. Council is requested to review the candidate’s applications and interview them prior to considering them for appointment. As a newer resident of Springfield, I'd like to see the library grow to match the growing and diversifying population of the city. 3. I volunteer with Relief Nursery and Food For Lane County but do not currently serve on any boards. 4. What community topics concern you that relate to this board I commission I committee? Why do you want to become a member? I would like to see a well-funded library that is able to serve its community with a broader selection of media. I know that people use the library for different reasons and I think the library does its best to serve patrons with the limited resources the library has, but I'd like to see more steps taken to ensure the library remains a valuable resource in the community. 5. She is interested in helping the library make the most effective use of new technologies while retaining its family friendly emphasis on community and literacy. Term Expires – 12/31/15 Gary Ross - Mr. Ross is a former teacher / librarian who oversaw library service for Springfield Public Schools and held a similar post at the Lane Education Service District prior to his retirement. He is also currently a member of the Willamalane Board of Directors. He is a resident of the Thurston area. He is very interested in the overall improvement of library services in Springfield and in extending the library’s reach into the eastern portion of the city. Term Expires – 12/31/16 Robyn Sattler – Currently serves as the Board Chair. She has also been active in library fund- raising activities for several years through both the Friends and the Foundation. In addition she has served on Springfield’s Community Development Block Grant Advisory Committee and the Downtown Urban Renewal Citizen Advisory Committee. Term Expires – 12/31/15 Barbara Stramler – Is the Board Chair and a seven-year resident who has been an active volunteer at her children’s schools (Thurston HS, Briggs MS, and Page Elementary). She is also active in the local Camp Fire Girls organization. She and her children are regular visitors to the library and one of her priorities is to retain and, some day, expand, current library operating hours and services.
