General
This speciRcation is for use over any type of approved structural
deck Iwithout insulafion} which can receive and adequa1e1y retain
noils or other types of mechanical fasteners that may be recom~
mended by the deck manufocturer. Examples of such decks are
wood and plywood. This speciRcation is not for use directly over
lightweight, insulafing concrete decks.
Design and installation of the deck and/or substrate
must result in the roof draining freely and ta outlets
numerous enough and so located as to remave water
pramptly and campletely. Areas where water pands
for more than 24 hours are u.. ...".: .ble and are
nat eligible ta receive a Schuller Roofing Systems
Guarantee.
Note: All general instructions contained in the current Schuller
Commercial/Industrial RooRng Systems Manual should be consid.
ered part of this specification.
Flashings
Flashing details can be found in the "Bituminous Flashings" section
of the Schuller Commercial/Industrial RooRng Systems Manual.
Application
Over wood board decks, one ply of sheathing paper must be used
under the base felt and on tap 0\ the wood bOOrd deck.
Note: On roof decks with slopes up ta 1" per foot IB3.3 mm/ml,
the rooRng felts may be installed either perpendicular or parallel to
the roof indine. On slopes over 1" per loot 183.3 mm/m), refer to'
Paragraph 6.11 of this section for special requirements.
Using GlasBase, GlasBose Plus, Ventsulation, or PermaPIy 28,
stort with a 12" 1305 mm) width la speciRc base sheet may be a
condifion of Guaranteel. The following base sheet courses are to
be applied full width, lapping the preceding felt 2" 151 mmJ on the
side laps and 4" 11 02 mm} on the end laps. Noil the side laps 9"
{229 mm) o.c. Dawn the longitudinal center of each felt, place two
rows of nails spaced approximately 11" 1279 mm) apart, with the

nails stoggered on approximately 18" (457 mm) centers. Use nails
or fosteners appropria1e to the type of deck with 1" {25 mml mini.
mum diameter caps. For addifional fastener informafion, refer ta
the Fastener Data in the "Roof Deck" section of the current Schuller
Commercial/Industrial RooRng Systems Manual.
Using GlasPIy Premier, PermoPly'R, or GlasPly IV, apply a "iece
18" 1457 mm} wide, then over that, a full width piece. The follow-
ing felts are to be applied full width overlapping the preceding felts
by 19" 1483 mml sa thai at least 2 plies 01 felt cover the base
felt/substrate at alllocafions. Install each felt sa that it is Rrmly and
uniformly set, without voids, into the hot bitumen lwithin ot25"F
lot 14"C] of the EVT) applied just before the felt at a nominal rate of
23 Ibs. per square 11.1 kg.m'l over the enfire surface. Installation
over porous substrates such as roof insulation may require up to
33 Ibs. per square 11.6 kg/m'} of hot bitumen.
Surfacing
Prior to applicafion of GlasKap, cut the cap sfleet into handleable
lengths 112' . 18' (3.66 m . 5.50 mil. lay the material out on the
roof and allow it to relax and Ratten. To accommodate a full width
sheet, apply a mopping of hot asphalt, approximately 20"F obove
the EVT, aI a nominal rate of 23 Ibs. per square (1.1 kg/ m'). (The
higher temperature of asphalt maximizes the bonding of tl,e cap
sheet to the p~ felts.) Then Rop the cap sheet into the hot asphalt.
On subsequent courses, the cop sheet is positioned upside down,
directly over the sheet in the preceding course such that the side lap
area of the preceding sheet is exposed. Care should be token to
maintoin 2" 151 mm} side laps and 6" 1152 mml end lops. Asphalt
is applied in the some manner os before, making sure to olso cover
the 2" (51 mml exposed side lap. Asphalt may olso be applied to
the exposed "upside down" cop sheet, prior to "Ropping" it into the
hot asphalt. The cap sheet must be Rrmly ond uniform~ set, without
voids, into the hot asphalt with 011 edges and laps well sealed.
Aspholt should meet the requirements of ASTM D 312. The controc'
tor must provide a Schuller conRrmation number for osphalt on jobs
which require a Guarantee. Check with a Schuller Technical Service
Specialist for special requirements in hot climates.
