HomeMy WebLinkAboutItem 02 Pride Day Proclamation PROCLAMATION LESBIAN/GAY/BISEXUAL/TRANSGENDER RECOGNITION DAY AUGUST 9, 2014 WHEREAS, the City of Springfield is committed to upholding the provisions of the Oregon Equality Act; and WHEREAS, the city wishes to recognize the many positive contributions of its citizens, employees, business owners, volunteers and current and former elected leaders who are lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender; and WHEREAS, on June 26th 2013 the Supreme Court of the United States declared Section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act unconstitutional therefore allowing same-sex couples the marriage benefits granted by the federal government; and WHEREAS, today we gather to acknowledge the progress that has been achieved but also note that more remains to be done to ensure that every single American is treated equally regardless of sexual orientation or gender identification; NOW, THEREFORE, I, Christine L. Lundberg, Mayor of the City of Springfield, do hereby proclaim Saturday, August 9th, 2014 to be PRIDE DAY our annual day of recognition and pride for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender persons in our community.
