Employee Recognition: Brenda Jones, 20 Years
1. Personnel data, promotions, career highlights, and significant accomplishments
Brenda began her employment with the City of Springfield in May of 1994.
She has had various assignments across many departments that have included, but are not
limited to:
Administrative Support for the Project Manager for the Sony Development
Part-time Administrative Support in the Community Services Division helping
out with administrative support in Code Enforcement and the Building Division.
Temporary - Fire Prevention Technician working on the Grass and Weeds
Abatement Program (twice).
Clerical Support in the City Manager’s Office.
Clerk II to Management Support Specialist in Planning. In this position, as
always, she wears many hats.
She is the primary administrative support for the Planning Division and the Planning
Commission. She was instrumental in championing the paperless process with the
Planning Commissioners researching, and procuring tablets.
She held the position of AIC Management Analyst while helping out with the budget
process for DPW.
She is staff Liaison for the Springfield Museum and the Museum Board.
She is currently providing assistance to the Building Division for all budgetary
considerations and requirements, including the never-ending challenges of financial
management as it relates to Accela.
Annexation Program creator and administrator providing oversight of the City’s legal
obligation for the program.
She is part of the DPW Web Team and is responsible for maintaining the Current
Development Website.
2. How has the Department changed over the employee’s career?
The merger of the Development Services and Public Works Departments was particularly
difficult for Brenda as she was very much married to the Development Services
Department. She finally understood that this actually provided more of an opportunity
and she has since fully embraced the merger whole-heartedly. Once again, I have often
times referred to her as the “matriarch of the Department”.
3. How has the employee grown in their position and their career?
Brenda is determined to reach the goals that she has set for herself .
She has taken on collective aspirations of those around her and in doing so, found a new
home.
4. What significant projects or events has the employee been involved in?
Brenda has been involved in various committees over the years including Chairperson of
the Customer Relations Committee, SEE Committee, My Idea’s Committee, and
volunteer for the OPEU election process.
As is the case with most administrative staff that do not have the opportunity to work on
“projects” or measureable “accomplishments” their highlights are generally in the form
of the dependable, steadfast foundation and seamless support they provide to staff,
supervisors, managers and beyond, every day. Brenda is an outstanding example of
administrative professionalism. Her professional competence is applied to everything she
undertakes and applies her broad knowledge of the city’s policies and procedures and
more importantly, her quiet determination to ensure a “job well-done” mentality to every
endeavor.
5. What positive comments do her co-workers have to share?
Her dedication and love for the City of Springfield is infinite. She has been described by
her co-workers as “professional, motherly, dedicated, credible, caring, warm, generous,
committed, thorough, friendly, trustworthy, resilient and responsible”.
Brenda is a shining example of what every City of Springfield employee should strive to
become. Her dedication to the City of Springfield, employees and citizens is
unsurpassed and has not gone unnoticed. I often refer to her as the “Face of
Springfield”. (See City webpage)
Brenda is an inspiration to her family, her peers, co-workers and everyone she comes in
contact with, in the words of one of her co-workers’ , “Brenda is Awesome”.
