RE: SOILS AND FOUNDATION CONDITIONS, 3654 VITUS LANE, RIVER HEIGHTS
Dear Mr. Thompson:
I.am writing this letter to present the results of our verification of soils and foundation conditions
at the future site of 3654 Vitus Lane in the River Heights subdivision.Per the 8/13/2007 GeoScience
. Report,this lot is located in Design Area DA-2,with hard,fractured RU-101 (igneous rock)located
below I to 2 feet of SU-D, a gravelly, sandy lean Clay.
The site was visited on May 30, 2014 after the foundation excavation had been completed. The
entire lot had been excavated to depths ranging from 12 to about 18 inches. The floor of the
foundation excavation consisted entirely of fractured stained state(STS)to visually fresh state(V FS)
RU-I 01. The excavator had encountered refusal throughout the excavation. This inconsistent with
DA-2.
Based on the observations and measurements of the Unconfined Compressive Strength of in-place.
RU-101 (greater than 9.000 psf), and using the Bell-Casagrande Method, the ultimate bearing
capacity of the foundation material is greater then 18,000 psf. Using a factor of safety of 3 for dead
and live loads, the allowable bearing capacity is 6,000 psf.
Therefore, the foundation design(for maximum bearing pressures of 1,500 psf) is conservative.
If you have any questions regarding this matter, please do not hesitate to contact me at(541) 607-
5700.
