Foundation underpinning of existing single-family residence
Springfield permit no. COM2007 -00706

PURPOSE AND SCOPE
As requested, K & A Engineering, Inc. has made a special inspection of installation of four steel helical piers and
. brackets to underpin the northeast comer of the foundation of the existing single-fafTlily residence ~t the subject
project site. K & A Engineering, Inc. made design drawings and speCifications for flis underpinning, dated May
14,2007.
The purpose of our inspection was to verify pier installation, subsurface soil conditions, and adequate load
I
capacity for the installed piers. The scope included a site inspection and this repor;.
INSPECTION
Four helical piers and brackets were installed at locations specified in our design ra commendations. Piers
consisted of 2.875-inch diameter tubular steel shafts having one a-inch and one 10-inch at the end of each pier.
The steel piers metthe design specifications for materials and construction. Piers Were installed to depths
greater than our recommended minimum, with an estimated uttimate capacity exc~eding our required 36-kip
minimum. An as-built pier plan is attached to this report, and table 1 summarizes pier installation.
Brackets consisted of pre-fabricated, factory-constructed units having a certified c~pacity exceeding our
specified 20-kip minimum. Brackets were installed into neatly cut notches in the f90ting as specified, and
connected to the foundation as per our requirements. The pier shafts were permar ently attached to the
brackets using materials and methods recommended by the pier bracket manufact Irer.
