Re: Assessment of Damage

Jim,
Per your request,Johnson Broderick Engineering visited the property located at 679 South 79th
Street in Springfield, Oregon. The purpose of our visit was to assess damage to the residence as
a result of a tree strike.
The property is located in a hilly, secluded region of eastern Springfield, adjacent to BLM land.
There is a main residence with a garage as well as a shop to the northeast of the residence.
During the recent snow and ice storm, several trees fell, and a couple of these impacted the
garage at the existing residence as well as the shop. At the garage,the tree hit at the edge of
the roof, denting the flashing and causing damage to an existing beam. At the shop, a tree fell
and damaged an exterior wood purlin which supported the eave formed by corrugated metal
roofing.
Our office reviewed the damage and documented it with several photographs. Upon review of
the documentation, it became apparent that the damage was limited in spread and did not
cause significant structural concern. However,the beam supporting the roof of the garage was
impacted and split open at the end, revealing dry rot that has compromised its structural
integrity. At the shop, our assessment of the damage and exploration of the framing from the
interior revealed that the extent of the damage was limited to the failed portion visible from
the outside.
Our recommendation at the garage is to pull the roofing material up, remove nails fastening the
decking to the damaged beam below, remove the damaged beam, and replace it with a new in-
kind beam. We recommend replacing the removed roofing with a membrane-style roof to
allow enough fall for runoff at this shallowly-sloped roof.
At the shop, our recommendation is to remove the damaged portions of the framing and the
roofing and replace in-kind.
