Steven:
Substitution of 5/8" bolts for the specified 1/2" welds studs is fine.
As far as the rest of the shop drawing goes, you were correct in noting that this submission
is inadequate. See attached redline to the erection drawing for the several of issues I
spotted. Other items include a lack of weld symbols, part MK1 not indicating what steel
section is used, and lack of proper dimensioning views on connecting plates and angles.

The contractor is wanting to submit with bolts in lieu of welded studs (steel guys comment -
unless you are mass production there' re a pain).

With a full-pen weld, yes.

I just got a call from the GC indicating that the steel fabricated prep the channel for the splice on the side that

Does that work?

"hhat'd be fine. Actually; the design load on that end of the channels is really low... l'd be ok with
welding on a piece of rebar (already have weldable reinforcement on this job, so doesn't require a new
spec) near the top of the channel to extend that last 8" instead of going to the trouble to full-pen splice a
channel.

Craig with KIWI Fab wanted me to ask if it will be ok to splice the four long MC8x8.S. The MC steel
conies in a 20ft length and the four pieces are 10'-8", so you would have a 8" splice that would be cast in
the concrete footing. It would be a full pen weld and buried in concrete.
Let me know.
