I based my design on the drawings and information that you sent to me earlier this month which included the preliminary roof framing plan, building section, elevations, and floor plan. I understand that the northwest end of the building will be extended four feet to the northwest in order to increase the bathrooms to be ADA compliant. It will also increase the existing office and storage room. The existing wall will be removed to allow the new roof beams to be added and supported by the new northwest wall. The rest of the structure will remain as is and a larger outdoor smoking area will be developed at the west side of the structure. This original building is about 100-feet long (north to south) and 50-feet wide with the additional northwest wing area so this structure is larger than 3000 square feet and requires my engineering stamp on the drawings. They have been prepared under my direct supervision. My design is limited to sizing the roof support members for the extension, the footings that will support the new walls, and the post and beams. I analyzed the roof framing utilizing the provisions set forth in the 2009 IBC with State of Oregon Amendments (OSSC 2010). The roof snow load used was 25 psf and the footings were designed for an allowable soil bearing value of 1500 psf. There are no window openings in the new walls and only a couple of dozen square feet of increase in the wind loading so there is little need to engineer shear walls as there will be an ample amount of wall with the new 35-foot long replacement endwall.
