Proclamation
Whereas, Nearly 24 million Americans – including more than 4,400 in Springfield
– have diabetes, a serious disease that has no cure. More than one-third of the
people with diabetes, including 108,000 Oregonians, do not know they have the
disease; and
Whereas, Millions of diabetics lack access to the care, treatment, and education
needed to manage the disease and prevent its often serious and costly
complications; and
Whereas, An increase in community awareness of risk factors and symptoms
related to diabetes can improve the likelihood that people with diabetes will get the
attention they need before suffering such complications; and,
Whereas, The United Nations General Assembly has designated World Diabetes
Day, November 14, as a United Nations Day to be observed annually,
Now, Therefore, I, Christine L. Lundberg, Mayor of the City of Springfield, do
hereby proclaim the week of November 10-17, 2012 as
“Pacific Northwest Diabetes Week”
in Springfield, Oregon, and encourage citizens to educate themselves about the risk
factors and symptoms of diabetes.
